Frequently Asked
Questions
After I have installed LapBack
a window pops up and asks me for password?
The first time you start LapBack
a password window appears. In this window you can
type in a password you would like LapBack to use for
encryption of your backed up files. You can choose
what password to use. Caution! If you encrypt your
backup files, you should choose a password that is
easy to remember. LapBack uses an AES256 (256-bit)
or a 3 DES (168-bit) encryption, so if you forget
your password, it will not be possible to restore
your backup.
Where do
I insert the serial code?
During installation you will come
to the screen "User Information" containing a text
field "Serial Number" with the text "Trial" filled
in; you delete the word "Trial" and write in your
serial number. Please remember that you have to type
in your serial number with a hyphen between every
5th character, for example: 1A1A1-2B2B2-3C3C3-4D4D4.

listed in the restore list, under the "Restore" tab.
To browse a folder in the restore list; double click
or right click on the folder you want to browse and
a new window will appear where the containing sub
items are listed.
You can restore an item inside the browsed folder
without restoring the entire folder. To restore an
item (file or folder) inside the browsed folder,

appear with the question "Do you want to restore
this item". Press the "Yes" button to restore this
item; the item will then be restored in the original
location on your hard drive. You can also use drag &
drop to restore the item to a different location.
Where do
I store my backup? / What storage media can I
use to store my backup to?
There are several storage media
you can use to store your backup to; You can take
backup to:
1. Internal and external storage drive (e.g. an
external HDD or a USB pen drive)
2. CD / DVD
3. Network area
Common mistake when backing up to CD / DVD
A common mistake users do when trying to backup to
CD / DVD is using a CD / DVD disc which the CD / DVD
burner does not support. Always check what CD/DVD
disc your CD / DVD burner supports. Here is what you
should check:
- Check if your CD burner supports CD-RW (a
rewriteable), if not you should only use CD-R
(writeable) disc.
- DVD has two different formats, DVD-R and DVD+R
- If you have DVD burner you should check what
format your DVD burner supports DVD-R or DVD-RW or
DVD +R or DVD + RW.
Many of the new DVD burners support all formats.
What is
incremental backup?
LapBack makes incremental backups
of folders and files that you have added to the
backup list. During the initial backup, all folders
and files are backed up. The next time you backup,
only new or changed folders and files are backed up.
It is important to remember that the modified files
will replace the older version of the files that
have already been backed up.
How can I
take backups of Outlook items?
To backup your email, contacts or
other Outlook items, double click on "Outlook
folders" in the backup list with your left mouse
button. A new window will appear listing your
Outlook items. Check the boxes of the items you want
to include in your backup and press the button.
Press the button to start the backup.
Caution! LapBack does not backup or restore email
account settings, i.e. the address of your email
account or the settings you have selected. It is a
good idea to create a text file containing your
email account settings so when you backup you also
backup the text file containing your email account
settings. This way you can restore the text with
your email account settings if should you loose it.
How do I
restore Outlook items?

other Outlook items, double click on "Outlook
folders" in the restore list with your left mouse

of your email account or the settings you have
selected (see above how to store your email address
using notes).
Does
LapBack support Outlook 97?
LapBack only makes backups of the
entire Outlook 97 (.pst) file and does not support
the backing up of individual Outlook 97 items.
LapBack backs up the entire Outlook 97 (.pst) file.
This means that when you restore the file you will
loose all emails dated between the backup date and
the restore date. Therefore, please remember to back
up Outlook frequently enough to prevent loosing
valuable emails.
